Lithium orotate (microdose)

Lithium orotate (the orotate salt form)

Mechanism

Lithium is a naturally occurring mineral your body absorbs from drinking water (in trace amounts) and certain foods. At microdoses, it supports the brain's wiring at the level of cell-to-cell connections — and a major 2025 *Nature* paper showed that running low on lithium is one of the earliest detectable changes in the brain before Alzheimer's. We use the orotate salt because it delivers lithium without the amyloid-binding problem the prescription form has.

Why we use it

Most people associate lithium with bipolar medication. That's a dose roughly a thousand times higher than this. Nutritional-dose lithium has a long, quiet record in cognitive aging — including in towns whose drinking water naturally has more of it. We include it because the 2025 *Nature* finding makes the case for early intervention.

How we dose it

Hericea uses 1 mg elemental per serving (per PM packet). The clinical trial range that anchors this dose is 1–5 mg/day.

1 milligram of elemental lithium — a true microdose. The prescription form of lithium used in psychiatry is 600–1,800 milligrams a day, roughly a thousand times this. We're in nutritional territory, not pharmaceutical.

Quality & sourcing

≥98% lithium orotate; elemental Li per-serving confirmed per lot; per-lot Prop 65 audit.

Orotate salt, NOT carbonate.

Cautions

  • consult physicianConsult physician if you take pharmaceutical lithium (lithium carbonate). Hericea is a low-dose supplemental form; combining is not recommended without oversight.

Mechanism + animal

Brain lithium deficiency was one of the earliest changes detectable in Alzheimer's-prone mice; restoring lithium with the orotate form (not carbonate) prevented synapse loss and reversed cognitive decline.

The 2025 paper that changed the field. Specifically validates the orotate form over carbonate — which is why our supplement uses orotate.

RCT

Microdose lithium (300 µg/day) for 15 months improved cognition in Alzheimer's patients vs placebo.

Earliest human trial showing the microdose strategy can move cognitive outcomes — proof of concept at a far lower dose than psychiatric lithium.

RCT · 96 weeks

Low-dose lithium for 2 years in adults with mild cognitive impairment slowed decline and reduced the rate of progression to dementia in an open-label follow-up.

Strongest human evidence to date for low-dose lithium in the population most relevant to the perimenopausal preventive-cognition question.

Modern pilot study confirmed feasibility, safety, and biomarker response of low-dose lithium in MCI.

Most recent human data — establishes that the protocol is safe and tolerable in the cohort we care about.
